Senestraro was a unique project for an orthodontics practice in Sherwood, Oregon, where we transformed their office expansion into an opportunity for long-term growth. By transitioning from tenant to landlord, the client gained greater control over their space and significant financial benefits.
Situated on three irregular parcels totaling 1.25 acres at the edge of a major highway and a growing residential area, the site posed design challenges and opportunities. Our team delivered a creative solution: a 9,500 sq. ft. single-story building that maximizes the triangular site’s potential. Its dynamic, three-orientation design blends with the surroundings while making a bold architectural statement. The layout ensures efficient use of the property, accommodating the clinic and additional tenants.
The building’s roof is a standout feature, with bold black steel-clad shed roofs rising from the ground to 19 feet before bending at an 85-degree angle. Supported by heavy timber beams, the roofs extend outward to create sheltered spaces while clerestory windows flood the interior with natural light. This integration of striking form and practical function ensures a bright, open interior that balances energy efficiency and privacy.
Below the dramatic roofline, a façade of wood siding, dark brick, and light-grey stucco weaves together a cohesive yet dynamic aesthetic. Wood and brick anchor the design to the natural surroundings and the robust timber and steel framework, while stucco and black steel-framed windows lend a clean, modern touch.
Inside, the orthodontic clinic occupies 3,500 sq. ft. and benefits from the framework. The rhythmic placement of windows and wood screens enhances privacy, introduces natural light, and adds visual interest to the smooth stucco surfaces.
Designed with a focus on patient experience, the space is both functional and calming. Large windows frame views of a nearby wooded area, while a pond with waterfalls will enhance the tranquil atmosphere. Patients can enjoy a serene, natural setting as they wait, reflecting the client’s commitment to exceptional care.
The building was designed with flexibility and community impact in mind, accommodating up to three additional tenants with potential uses such as office space, retail, or a small café with outdoor seating. Thoughtful features like recessed entryways and sheltered outdoor spaces create a welcoming and functional environment for diverse businesses, ensuring the structure adapts to the evolving needs of the growing Sherwood community.
